Suspect in rash of Franklin auto burglaries in custody

Kedarius Smith
Age: 20
Nashville, TN

An intensive investigation has led to the identification of a suspect responsible for more than 15 auto burglaries, two stolen vehicles, several credit card frauds, and the aggravated burglary to a family home – all in Franklin.

Kedarius Smith, 20, of Nashville, is currently in custody in Simpson County, Kentucky. He is awaiting extradition to Williamson County, where he will be charged in a slew of crimes in Franklin.

Franklin Police are glad that Smith is off the street, but say that the need for residents to lock their car doors every night is as important as ever. “The number of burglaries to cars left unlocked by their owners continues to be a big problem,” said Lt. Charles Warner. “Preventing crime isn’t just police business – it’s everyone’s business. Residents who remove valuables from their vehicle and lock their car up every night are dramatically less-likely to become an auto burglary victim. We need your help, Franklin. Please, PLEASE, lock it up.”

Released May 11, 2018

Franklin Police are asking for the public’s help to take an at-large, armed felon off the street.

Early Thursday morning, as seen in this video, the suspect entered several unlocked cars in Franklin’s Ladd Park Subdivision. Only unlocked vehicles were targeted, and the suspect stole anything of value inside: gift cards, credit cards, electronics, etc.

Most troubling is the semi-automatic handgun that was stolen from one of the unlocked cars. The suspect, seen in these still images, used credit cards that were stolen during the burglaries later that same morning at the Walmart on Mallory Lane.

Franklin has seen an uptick in overnight auto burglaries in neighborhoods across the city. Police want to remind residents to remove your purses, computer bags, and other valuables – especially firearms, from your vehicle every night, and lock your car doors. Criminals hate well-lit areas, so be sure to turn on those outside lights, as well.

Franklin Police are offering a Crime Stoppers reward of up to $1,000 to anyone who can identify the suspect in these photographs and this video.
