Franklin, TN – At a ceremony last night at the Franklin Theatre, Franklin Tomorrow honored Police Volunteer Craig Owens with the Volunteer Spirit Award. Owens, who started calling Franklin home in 1996, is a long-time fan of law enforcement. “As a kid playing with friends in the backyard, I was always the cop in Cops and Robbers,” said Owens. “When I was eight or nine, I actually called the local police department of the city we lived in and asked if I could join the force. While they chuckled a bit when they told me no, my dream was revived in 2011 when the FPD said yes.”

There are 15 Franklin Police Volunteers. Each is a graduate of the Department’s Citizens’ Police Academy, an 8-week program designed to give residents an up-close look at the FPD, and the men & women who dedicate their lives to protecting Williamson’s biggest city. Franklin Police Volunteers undergo training in patrol, traffic direction, and customer service. These non-sworn representatives of the Franklin PD assist at special events, especially in and around downtown. In 2013 alone, Franklin Police Volunteer Craig Owens donated more than 240 hours of his time to the Department, in service to his community.

“The Franklin Police Department is incredibly fortunate to have the support of our Police Volunteers,” said Chief Deborah Faulkner who attended last night’s event. “Mr. Owens is a great representative of the volunteer spirit. The hard work, dedication, and camaraderie of our volunteers helps the FPD reach our mark of service with excellence.”

Last night marked Franklin Tomorrow’s eighth Exemplary Community Volunteer & Volunteer Spirit Awards. Franklin Tomorrow is a community visioning nonprofit that seeks to engage the community, foster collaboration, and advocate for a shared vision for the future of Franklin.
